Physical Therapists

Timothy M. Schell, PT
Slippery Rock University, Mayo Clinic
BA, Certificate

Timothy M. Schell was born and raised in Sharpsville, PA. During his youth, Tim was involved in sports and enjoyed the competitiveness and camaraderie that accompanies athletics. After graduating from Sharpsville Area High School, Tim furthered his education at Slippery Rock University majoring in Biology. It didn't take Tim long to decide that Physical Therapy was his calling and after graduation from "The Rock" in 1974, Tim received his certification in Physical Therapy from Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, 1976.

Tim's first job was at Pattie A. Clay Infirmary, Richmond, KY from 1976 through 1977. His next position was with Grove City United Community Hospital in 1977 where he was the Director of Physical Therapy for six years. It was while he was holding that position that he noticed a need in the Grove City area for an outpatient physical therapy clinic. In 1983 Tim founded TMS Physical Therapy to be on the cutting edge in treatment for patients of all ages who were hurting and in need of rehabilitation. Around the same time, Tim founded the sports medicine program for Grove City Area School District and provided care for 20 years to the high school athletes and continues rehabilitating many of the area's athletes. Today, TMS Physical Therapy is the frontrunner of this profession in the Grove City area, employing 20 full time personnel. The size of this facility has grown from 1200 square feet to 7200 square feet including the area's only therapeutic pool. Wow, not bad for starting out with just an idea!! TMS has been able to grow because of Tim's compassion, gentleness and kindness that also shine in the people he employs. Some may think Tim is a perfectionist, however, isn't that the kind of Therapist you want working with you?

Tim has never been satisfied with sitting still and now owns two physical therapy clinics and is in partnership with five other clinics in the northwest PA area. When not practicing physical therapy full time, Tim can be found at workshops and conferences fine tuning his skills. In December 2004, Tim received his Direct Access License that allows him to evaluate and treat a patient in physical therapy without a referral from the patient's primary physician for up to 30 days. There is never a time when Tim is not learning. According to Tim, "when you feel you have nothing more to learn, then it is time to retire". Tim is a member of American Physical Therapy Association, Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association, Northwest Physical Therapy District and the Physical Therapy Provider Network. He is also an Adjunct Faculty of Gannon University in Erie PA. Tim has managed to balance his career with his loving wife, Laurie of 30+ years and raising two grown sons whom both have their own successful careers. If he has any spare time, you may see Tim on the local links, as he is an enthusiastic golfer.

We are glad that you decided to come to TMS Physical Therapy and we know that you will not find better care or a better staff at any other clinic. Sit back and relax, you are going to "Experience the Healing Touch".

William J. Lurty, PT
Slippery Rock University, University of Pittsburgh, Northeastern University
BS, Certificate, M. Ed

Bill Lurty came to TMS Physical Therapy in 1985 from the Erie Physical Therapy Association. Bill has become a fixture at TMS and his fellow employees look to him for advice and his sense of humor keeps everyone on their toes.

After high school graduation in Pittsburgh, Bill attended Slippery Rock State Teacher's College in Slippery Rock, PA where he received his Bachelor of Science in Health Education. Before furthering his education, Bill spent two years in the military in the Special Services of the United States Army. Upon completion of his military duties, Bill then received his Certificate in Physical Therapy from D.T. Watson School of Physical Therapy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. He later attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA where he received a Master of Education in Rehabilitation Administration.

Bill's professional experience includes being the Chief Physical Therapist at the Goodwill Industries in Pittsburgh and Staff Physical Therapist in Columbia Hospital also in Pittsburgh. He then moved to the Erie, PA area where he worked for the Visiting Nurses Association in an outpatient setting. Bill further developed a new physical therapy department at St. Vincent Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Erie, taking the department from the drawing board to completion. Upon completion of this project Bill became Executive Director of Children's Comprehensive Outpatient Center followed by owning his own clinic until moving to Grove City, PA.

Here at TMS, Bill is the Director of the Aquatic Program. Our aquatic patients enjoy Bill's easy yet persuasive manner. In Bill's younger years he could be seen on the diving boards of the local swimming holes and he can still do a mean back flip.

Bill has three sons, one daughter and five grandchildren who are the love of his life. We are so lucky to have Bill as part of Team TMS.

Upon returning to the United States Tim enrolled at Indiana University of PA studying Biology pre med. While in college Tim worked with the Commonwealth Systems Corporation, a subsidiary of First Commonwealth Financial Corporation, as a computer technician trouble shooting systems and doing upgrades for newly acquired banks. After graduation from I.U.P. Tim took a few years off from furthering his education and went to Caracas, Venezuela where he worked for Western Atlas International. While in Venezuela he was responsible for training all personnel in Health Safety and Environmental Protection protocols. Tim returned to the United States to attend Slippery Rock University Physical Therapy Program.

"Tim E", as the staff at TMS affectionately calls him, wanted to become a physical therapist because of the ties to sports/athletics while allowing him to have a dynamic job. Every day and every patient brings new, unique challenges and gives the opportunity to interact with a multitude of personalities.

Upon receiving his Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Tim was hired by Affiliated Rehabilitation Center as manager of three clinics including the successful opening of Slippery Rock Physical Therapy. In 2004, Tim Schell was fortunate to be able to bring him back to Grove City as a staff therapist.

When not at work, spending time with his wife Kim and son Michael, Tim can be found on the local golf courses from April through September. The Earman's live in Grove City and are happy to call Grove City and TMS Physical Therapy home.

As you can see by the above "resume" Ben has treated a variety of patients in an outpatient setting and acute care setting. With his sports background Ben knows what it is like to be injured and how important it is to get back in the "game". His specialty is Orthopedics, however, he is comfortable treating a variety of patients and all his patients do extremely well with treatment.

It was after breaking his leg while playing football that Ben decided to become a Physical Therapist. He was impressed by the knowledge, compassion and drive a Therapist must have to make sure the patient is back to their normal strength and abilities.

His activities now include hunting and fishing and Ben is a member of several hunting and fishing organizations. Ben and Bella, his Springer Spaniel and the second love of his life, can be seen in the woods and fields flushing and hunting pheasants.

As of December 2004, our Physical Therapists have been licensed through the State of Pennsylvania for Direct Access. Direct Access allows a physical therapist to treat a patient without a referral/prescription for up to 30 days from the date of the first treatment. Due to the newness of Direct Access, not all insurances may pay for the visits. We still ask that patients check with their own insurance companies to ensure their insurance will pay/self pay for the visits through Direct Access or if a prescription/referral is required.
